For most Muslims, the first history of Islam is written by Hazrat Shams Tabrez. This book was written in 172 Hijri and is still considered one of the best histories of Islam. The Urdu manuscript can be found at Erhan Erkal University Library. The first Arabic edition was published in Cairo in 1875 by Professor Yusuf Zu’bi. A very fascinating story has always been prevalent among Muslims that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) met Hazrat Shams Tabrez on his way to Medina after migrating from Mecca just before his death. The same story of meeting Hazrat Shams Tabrez is also mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari only, but there it is also mentioned that he was a master of Persian language who was very interested in Islam. According to the hadith, Hazrat Shams once visited Muhammad on his way back to Medina after returning from one of his pilgrimage to Mecca. He said, "I wish I could understand your teachings." He then asked about the fifth pillar of Islam, Zakat (charity), which is obligatory for every Muslim who is able to pay it. Muhammad said, "O Tabrez! You are intelligent. The month is one of God's values, the day is also a value, and the hour of hours is also a value. Therefore, you must give a fifth part to each of them." He asked Muhammad about the meaning of Jihad (struggle). Muhammad said that Jihad means that after having faith in God, every time one has a good intention, he should try to do it. The objective behind this struggle should be to satisfy God and it cannot be something selfish. After listening to this answer, Hazrat Shams got confused and said that he still did not understand anything. Muhammad said, "O Tabrez! You are intelligent. The month is one of God's values, the day is also a value, and the hour of hours is also a value. Therefore, you must give a fifth part to each of them." Hazrat Shams again asked about the meaning of Jihad. Muhammad said that it means "striving in Allah's cause". He asked him whether there are any other obligations for this struggle which he had not mentioned so far. He replied that if he did good things for others, his own personal peace would be maintained. As Hazrat Shams still had doubts, Muhammad said that he could make his dream came true by telling him more about Islam. He suggested that he should abandon animal sacrifices and the slaughtering of animals for this purpose. Hazrat Shams asked Muhammad to tell him something about how he propagated his message. He replied that whenever there was a time for prayer, he called people toward it and reminded them of their duties to Allah. He advised his followers to sit together on Fridays and meditate on worldly affairs. If they saw injustice, they should avoid it. They should not be careless about food and clothes, but if someone did not have clothes to wear, they should supply it from what was available. cfa1e77820
